For AI Giants, Smaller is Sometimes Better

October 3, 2024

Some AI industry leaders are shifting their focus from large language models (LLMs) to smaller models. While large models gained attention in the wake of ChatGPT’s debut, companies now realize the benefits of smaller models. They cost less, return results faster, and are easier for data scientists to specialize.

Microsoft and other tech giants have embraced smaller models—incorporating them into their AI software and services. Even OpenAI has released smaller versions of flagship models. The shift towards smaller models is driven by factors such as the high cost of operating large models and the realization that smaller models can effectively handle many tasks.

While smaller models offer advantages in terms of cost and efficiency, larger models still have their place. Companies are exploring ways to combine smaller models with larger ones to create hybrid solutions that leverage the best of both worlds. As the AI landscape continues to evolve, the focus on smaller models represents a significant trend that is likely to shape the future of AI development and deployment.
